At the Kenyan4Kenya Forum in London organized by Julius Kabere, the atmosphere was sombre as many attendee forumnists shared negative experiences of their investment nightmares in Kenya. From blood sucking families, corrupt leaders, poor communications, ...I mean the list is endless but I chose to open my eyes. I saw a group of old wazees and mamas in London, owners of a self help group and board members of Murata SACCO from Central Kenya, Murang`a. This started blowing my brains in spirals, why are those non educated farmers becoming millionaires and not us? The development of Kenya has been enhanced by the increment in the number of Co-operatives. The living conditions of communities have been improved by the financial bliss of the SACCOS. In estimate, over 6 million Kenyans are members of SACCOS. This is a multi billion industry that is worth the interest of the investment hungry Diasporas. Co-operatives have been involved in the provision of credit for the purchase of land, farm inputs, housing, education, medication and development of various business ventures. All areas that Kenyan`s abroad are keen to invest in.The success stories of the SACCOS in agriculture especially are an interesting story. Owing to the fact the agriculture is the backbone to the Kenyan economy, then it is absolutely important to recognize the contribution of SACCOS and self help groups.
Many Kenyans abroad have a link to small-scale farmers that can venture into value addition of their produce in order to earn higher returns. This is most critical especially in the agro-processing sector. This, my people, is one
area to venture. Other key areas that have been successful in the Kenyan Co-operative Movement include co-operative Bank of Kenya, The Kenya Union of savings and credit Co-operatives, Cooperative Insurance Company, National Housing Cooperative etc.
To register a SACCO, you have to contact Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) which license and regulate SACCOS. First apply for a license with necessary documents as requested. Then send a letter of intent, the necessary arrangement of premises, management, Policies, procedures and security among other important operational planning. Then onsite inspection will be followed by letter of compliance if you are successful and this will make your SACCO legal.
If you do not want to start one, join one that is already in existence so as you can start making your millions? Interested? Find trusted partnership so as we can all benefit from the booming business of partnership to improve our country. Yes, Your country need you as much as you need it
