Polygamy was an accepted practice in many cultures and as I write now, I know families, still living in a polygamous relationship. Mpango wa kando? No, Sugar Daddy? no, but real traditional marriage that allows both families to enjoy mutual benefits of being married to the same man. Well I was born in such a family. I know many more but what does that say about our society? Would I be happy if my husband married another?
It was well appreciated that there was more women than men, and hence men were allowed to marry more wives. The wealthiest got the pretiests bribes. As there was no scacity of land, nor was there need for educating women, it all seemed to work well until we educated the woman! that is what the men are now saying!
The demands in life now cannot allow many families to cater for 4 kids leave alone a second wife. There is a scarcity of resources that supported a very minimal population those days. The resources are almost becoming extinct. Life has become very expensive, due to our need for extravagant lifestyle and the increased population henceforth any normal person would not consider a second family.
HIV and AIDS is another reason why polygamy is not popular anymore. Being able to be with one partner and stay faithful is the only way to stay safe, if abstaining is not an option.
Well lets get real, which woman, in their normal sense allow their hubby to marry a second wife and happily share him? Not me for sure. As many women become liberated, they have managed to put this culture under the carpet, or just about. Christianity too has spread like wild fire, Thank God. Christians do not practice polygamy, hence the reduction in number.
Every one is now worried the number of single women have gone way up? what can be done then to enable a balance in life...maybe genetic engineering? As we ponder for the solution, lets say that this practice has not gone away, it has just been replaced by more fancier names..........still divorce rate is up? Now I am lost!
