They say, “show me your friends and I will tell who you are,” but I think it should be “show me your food and I will know who you are.
What does sukuma, a crucial greenery and ugali, our national meal, tell about Kenyan? That he or she is cheap? Maybe. Why do you think they are called sukuma wiki( push the week)? Thats because you can buy them cheaply when the monthly pay is dwindling. They will push the week until next pay day. Cheap foodstuffs have a foolish way of showing off, like fake, cheap accents. Sukuma has this silly hobby of sticking between the teeth when you are in the mood for mouthing too much, laughing your head off with a green stuff on your teeth! ouch, it happenned to you too...
Its just what the doctor ordered. Sukuma wiki goes well with ugali, Chapati, Rice, Mashed potatoes and its also has extraordinary nutritional value.. And since it sticks, Its goddness sticks too. Its so green but so tasty, you can feed it to those broccolli fearing kids. Serve it to your guests and let them ask what it is, then laugh out loud when they all have a green tooth! Lets make a habit of eating our national food in our homes. Sometimes abroad its hard to to get the food, but go the extra mile, give your family a green smile...take the challenge, make March a sukuma wiki month abroad!
The economy is at at bad state, sometimes out eting habits are too expensive, while we could get more value by eating simple cheap food with high nutritional value, like porriage. One of my personal friend brought blueband and Zesta plum jam to my house last week, and boy! my girls were so happy! Kenyan food are quality! What Kenyan food do you so much love?
